Why?

Hi! I am new to the blogging thing, but if you stay with me I am sure that I will eventually make sense. OK, here we go.

I am sure you are wondering about the reason I named this blog "Living Covered in His Dust". I mean come on dust never goes away, make a house look dirty, and do not get me started on allergies.

Well, if you look back in Bible times you might understand. Back then, a kid about six year old would go to school and memorize the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy). Then at about the age of 10, the best of them would go on to memorize the rest of the Hebrew scriptures (Genesis through Malachi!!!!!!!), while the others went off to the learn the family trade. Then when the reach about the age of fourteen, the best of the best would go seek a rabbi that they wanted to be like. Now, each rabbi had a way of interrupting  the text, and this was called his "yoke". Understand? OK, like I was typing, a fourteen year old would go to a rabbi and ask to be his disciple. Now the rabbi wanted to see if this kid had what it takes to spread his yoke, to see if the kid could be like him. So he would question the boy on the scriptures. If he thought that the kid was not good enough, he would tell them to go home and learn the family business. But! To those who were good enough, were the best of the best, the rabbi would say come and follow me. So, the kid would leave EVERYTHING to follow his rabbi. This discipline would do exactly what his rabbi does. He would walk exactly where the rabbi walks. Seriously! If you lived in that time, you would see rabbi's being followed by a group any number of people. Since there were no paved roads, walking in the dirt was the only option. Now when a rabbi walked, all the dirt and dust he kicked up would be caked on the disciples that were walking behind him. So, this saying came from a Mishnah sage, " May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi." And eventually the disciple became a rabbi and the cycle continued.

So how does this apply to my blog? I am glad you asked.

Well, rabbi's took only the best of the best of the best people to follow them. So what about Jesus? He asked fisherman and tax collectors. That means that they weren't the best of the best. They were not good enough. But in God's eyes, we are all good enough. We all can be like him.

I am trying my hardest to follow Jesus; I want to be able to share what I learn through this journey.
So why is this blog called "Living Covered in His Dust"? Because I want to live covered in the dust of my Rabbi, Jesus Christ.
Do you?
